The call
A resident came home from a late shift to a Queen Street tower, got into the lobby behind another resident, then found the apartment key was not on the ring. Building management would not be on site until 8am.
What we did
Identity was confirmed against a tenancy agreement emailed by her flatmate, who was out of town. We opened the apartment cylinder non-destructively at just after 3:30am. High-rise apartment doors are often fire-rated with heavy self-closers, so the technique is slower and more careful than a suburban front door — but the door and its fire rating stayed untouched.
The lesson
CBD apartments need a plan that does not depend on office hours. Leave a spare with someone nearby, and never let anyone drill a fire-rated apartment door when a pick will do the job.
