What Auckland Council actually requires

Under the Building Act and the F9/AS1 pool barrier standard, every pool gate in New Zealand must open away from the pool area, self-close from any open position, and self-latch without being pushed or pulled shut. The latch release has to be at least 1.5 metres above ground level when it is reachable from outside the barrier — or shielded so a child cannot reach through or over the fence to work it.

The inspector does not just glance at the gate. They release it from fully open, from part-open and from just off the latch, and it must close and latch from every angle without help. A gate that 'usually closes' fails.

Why pool gates fail inspection

Across Auckland — from Remuera villas to Howick family backyards — the failures are nearly always the same four: a latch mounted too low on the post, a worn magnetic latch that no longer catches every time, a gate closer that has lost tension, or a plain key-lock knob or twist latch set at adult-waist height where a child can reach it. The rules are not new, but since councils moved to mandatory periodic inspections, gates that used to scrape by no longer do.

A typical recent job: a Howick homeowner rang us ten days before re-inspection. The first inspection had failed on the latch height and a gate that would not self-latch. We removed the waist-height twist latch, fitted a pool-rated magnetic self-latching lock with the release at the regulation 1.5m, replaced the tired closer, and tested it exactly the way the inspector does. It passed the re-check.

Failed inspection? Do not wait for the re-inspection date

If your Auckland Council inspection letter has arrived and the gate is the problem, it is usually a same-visit fix — new latch, correct height, working closer, done. The fines for a non-compliant barrier are the cheap part of getting it wrong; pool fencing rules exist because gates get left ajar.
