The call
A Henderson homeowner found their aluminium entrance door would only latch, not lock — the bolt had stopped throwing when the handle was lifted. These narrow-style Yale mortice locks are common on aluminium joinery across West Auckland.
The wiring visible in the photo is the door's existing sensor loop — nothing to do with the lock, but it's why a careful strip-down matters on these doors.
What we did
We removed the lock body from the door edge, stripped it on the bench in the van, and found a fatigued spring and worn follower — classic wear on a lock that gets used dozens of times a day. New spring, serviced follower, fresh lubrication, and the cylinder re-pinned so the owners' existing key still works.
Everything went back in with the door's wiring untouched, and the bolt now throws positively every time the handle lifts. A full replacement lock would have cost considerably more and meant new keys for everyone.
The lesson
A mortice lock that stops throwing is often repairable at half the cost of replacement — if it's stripped and serviced properly. Lift the handle on your doors and check the bolt actually extends; catching wear early keeps it a cheap fix.
