The call
A builder rang from a site off Cavendish Drive just after 9am. His 2016 Toyota Hilux had come with a single key when he bought it second-hand, and that key had gone missing somewhere between the concrete pour and morning smoko. The ute was blocking a delivery and needed to move.
What we did
With no key to copy, we originated one from the vehicle's key code, cut it on the van's machine, then paired the transponder to the immobiliser with an Autel programmer. Because the missing key was unaccounted for on a public worksite, we erased all previously programmed keys so the lost one would no longer start the vehicle.
Total time on site was 55 minutes, including cutting a second spare while we were there.
The lesson
Buying a used import or a trade vehicle with one key is normal. Living with one key is the expensive part — a spare cut while you still have a working key costs a fraction of an all-keys-lost job. If your Hilux, Ranger or Navara has a single key on the ring, that is the job to book before you need it.
