The call
A family finished a swim near Howick beach and realised the keys to their Honda Odyssey were sitting on the driver's seat with all the doors locked. It was Sunday, the kids were cold, and the nearest dealer was shut.
What we did
Standard non-damaging entry with a wedge and long-reach tool, about eight minutes from arrival. Since the van was already there we cut a spare mechanical key and suggested they keep it in a wallet rather than the glovebox.
The lesson
Beaches and boat ramps are where we do a huge share of our weekend automotive work across East Auckland. Keep a spare key somewhere that is not inside the car, and never leave a fob in a bag on the seat.
