The call
An Onehunga homeowner had builders coming for a month and needed the side gate secure but accessible. Handing out house keys was a hard no, and the gate's existing Yale digital lock didn't suit being programmed and reprogrammed for a rotating crew.
The gate was a solid framed door-style gate in dark powdercoat — a great base for a mechanical combination lock.
What we installed
We fitted a weatherproof mechanical combination bolt above the existing Yale lock. Four-dial code, no batteries, no wiring — the builders got one code for the duration of the job, and when the work finished the owners changed the code in about a minute.
The bolt throws into a receiver on the post, so the gate now locks positively every time it's pulled shut. The existing Yale lock stays as the everyday family entry.
The lesson
Mechanical combination locks are the unsung hero for side gates and shared access: nothing to charge, nothing to corrode internally, and changing the code costs nothing. For coastal suburbs they're often a better pick than electronics.
