The call
A childcare centre near Newmarket's shops had an internal door that had stopped latching — staff were wedging it, which on a door between rooms of toddlers is not a plan. The latch bolt had worn smooth from tens of thousands of cycles.
In commercial settings, doors like this get more use in a month than a house door gets in years. Light-duty residential hardware simply doesn't survive.
What we did
We replaced the worn latch with a heavy-duty commercial-grade unit and adjusted the strike plate — the door had also dropped slightly, which was chewing through latches faster than normal. The old hardware came out, the mortice was tidied, and the new latch was fitted and tested through a few hundred cycles before we left.
The work was done between sessions so no rooms were out of action, and the centre got an invoice for their records with the hardware grade noted for their compliance file.
The lesson
Early childhood centres, clinics and offices should budget for door hardware as a wear item — and fit commercial-grade from the start on high-traffic doors. It costs slightly more once, instead of repeatedly.
