The call
A property manager rang about a Mount Eden unit where the tenant had moved out and the knobset was loose, scratched and missing a key anyway. Standard tenancy changeover — but the door had never had a deadbolt, which the new tenancy agreement required.
We see this constantly in Mount Eden and Sandringham flats: the original hardware from the seventies still hanging on, held together by paint.
What we installed
We fitted a new keyed entrance knobset and a single-cylinder deadbolt above it, both in satin chrome, and keyed them alike so the tenant carries one key. The deadbolt hole was bored fresh — clean cut through the door, strike properly morticed into the frame with long screws into the stud.
The old holes were reused where they lined up, so the door needed no filling or repainting. Two keys cut for the tenant, one for the manager's office, and a record kept of the key code for future copies.
The lesson
Tenancy changeovers are the cheapest time to upgrade door hardware — the flat is empty and the work takes under an hour. Keying alike saves years of which-key-is-it frustration.
