The deadbolt at this Mission Bay home had reached the point where replacement made more sense than another adjustment. We removed the cylinder, bolt and internal turn to inspect the existing door preparation.
The replacement
A new deadbolt was fitted into the existing opening, with the backset and strike alignment checked before final tightening. We tested the thumbturn and key repeatedly with the door both open and shut.
Smooth operation is important
A deadbolt should throw fully without pushing, lifting or pulling the door. Resistance usually means an alignment issue that should be corrected rather than forced.
