Replacing and aligning the bolt
We removed the old deadbolt, checked the existing bore and installed a correctly sized replacement. The bolt and strike were aligned so the lock operated smoothly without pushing against the door.
Stiff deadbolts should not be forced
If a deadbolt works with the door open but not closed, alignment is usually the problem. If it is stiff in both positions, the cylinder or bolt may be worn and should be checked before the key fails.
