The call
The owners of a renovated Grey Lynn villa had just finished their cedar front door and didn't want a chunky modern lock dominating it. But they did want fingerprint access — two teenagers who lose keys weekly had made the decision for them.
Cedar doors on villas are softer than they look and the mortice pocket needs to be cut cleanly. This is not a job for a drill and good intentions.
What we installed
We fitted a BioSecure fingerprint lock with a slim black profile that sits neatly against the cedar. Fingerprint, PIN, card and key override — the teenagers enrolled their prints on the spot and the parents keep the master codes.
The mortice was cut by hand to match the existing door preparation, the strike plate was set into the frame properly, and the door closes with the same satisfying thunk it always had.
The lesson
Villa doors can absolutely take smart locks — the trick is choosing a model sized for the door and cutting the mortice properly. Done right, you get modern access without touching the character of the door.
