Swapping a tired Milre for a Kaadas smart lock in Epsom

An early digital lock on its last legs, and a clean upgrade to fingerprint, PIN and key access. A straight swap on an Epsom front door.

Swapping a tired Milre for a Kaadas smart lock in Epsom

The call

The owner of a weatherboard doer-upper near Epsom's shops rang about her front door lock. It was an early Milre digital lock that had given years of service, but the buttons had become hit and miss, the batteries were draining every few weeks, and she had been locked out twice when it refused to wake up.

What we did

The Milre came off cleanly and the door was in good shape underneath, so this was a straightforward like-for-like swap. We fitted a Kaadas smart lock with fingerprint, PIN code, card and mechanical key access, set up her fingerprints and a master code, and walked her through changing codes and checking battery level from the keypad.

The Kaadas warns weeks before the batteries run flat, and the mechanical key override means a flat battery can never lock her out — the two things that had been letting her down with the old unit.

The lesson

First-generation digital locks were a big step up from a plain key, but they age: rubber buttons perish and battery management was basic. If your digital lock is over eight years old, eating batteries, or ignoring your code some mornings, it is telling you something. A modern replacement is usually a one-visit job using the same door prep.
