The call
A cafe owner in New Lynn could not unlock the aluminium shopfront door at 5:10am on a Saturday. Staff were outside, the bakery delivery was arriving, and doors opened at 6.
What we did
The hook bolt in the commercial patch lock had worn and the door had dropped slightly on its pivot, so the bolt was binding in the keeper. We opened it, replaced the lock body with equivalent stock from the van, and adjusted the pivot. They opened four minutes late.
The lesson
Shopfront doors cycle hundreds of times a day and they always fail at the worst hour. This one is now on a six-monthly service with the door closer and cylinder checked at the same time — far cheaper than another pre-dawn emergency.
