Seized sliding door lock on a Te Atatu Peninsula home

Ten years of harbour salt, one seized slider lock, and a homeowner about to force it into a much bigger repair.

The call

A homeowner two streets from the Te Atatu Peninsula waterfront could no longer lock the ranch slider. The key turned partway and stopped, and they had been leaving the door unlocked at night as a result.

What we did

The Whitco slider lock was corroded internally and the door had dropped on its rollers, so the hook was no longer meeting the keeper squarely. We replaced the lock body, adjusted the rollers to bring the door back to plumb, realigned the keeper and lubricated with a dry PTFE product rather than a wet spray that would attract salt and grit.

The lesson

In coastal suburbs — Te Atatu, Devonport, Mission Bay, the Hibiscus Coast — a stiff lock is usually corrosion plus misalignment, not a lock that needs forcing. Forcing it snaps the hook and turns a repair into a replacement.
