The call
A Pakuranga family had been using a broom handle in the track for months because their aluminium sliding door lock had stopped engaging. The latch would drop but not catch, and the key had stopped turning altogether.
Sliding door locks wear out from the inside — the hook or latch mechanism wears until it no longer grabs the keeper on the frame. By the time the key stops working, the internals are usually done.
What we did
We removed the door, pulled the old mortice lock, and fitted a new keyed sliding-door lock matched to the door profile. While the door was off we cleaned the track and adjusted the rollers — the door had been dragging, which was half the reason the lock never lined up.
The new lock is keyed, so the door can be locked from outside as well as in. Two keys supplied, and the door now glides instead of grinds.
The lesson
If a sliding door lock needs a lift or a shove to engage, the problem is usually alignment, not the lock itself — but by the time it's forced a few hundred times, both need attention. Fix the rollers and the lock together.
