The call
A Takapuna homeowner a few streets back from the beach had replaced the electronic lock on their side gate twice in three years. Salt air gets into keypads and battery compartments and the electronics quietly die.
They wanted keyless entry that would survive the coast. That rules out most consumer smart locks, no matter what the box says.
What we installed
We fitted a fully mechanical combination bolt: four dials, a positive sliding bolt, and a sealed mechanism with no electronics at all. It throws into a stainless receiver on the frame and locks every time the gate closes.
The old lock came off, the mounting holes were reused where possible, and the finish matches the existing dark hardware on the gate. Total time on site: about forty minutes.
The lesson
Within a few hundred metres of the water — Takapuna, Milford, the bays — mechanical beats electronic for gates almost every time. No batteries, no corroded contacts, no surprise failures in January.
