The call
A Ponsonby townhouse with a street-front entry gate had the classic problem: couriers, guests and kids all needed in, but the gate was either left unlocked all day or everyone rang the intercom. The owners wanted proper keyless entry on the gate itself.
Outdoor digital locks live a hard life — rain, sun and being slammed daily. The hardware has to be rated for it or you'll be replacing it within a year.
What we installed
We fitted a Yale digital lock rated for outdoor use, with PIN entry and a backlit keypad for night-time, plus a mechanical combination bolt as an independent second lock for when the property is empty. Exit from inside is a simple lever — important for fire egress.
Everything was mounted to the gate's box-section frame with stainless fixings, and the keypad shield was positioned so it's not visible from the footpath. Codes were set up per family member, with a guest code that's easy to rotate.
The lesson
Gate locks need to be chosen for weather exposure first and features second. A quality outdoor-rated unit costs a little more and lasts years longer than an indoor lock pressed into service outside.
